HOMEBUYER TAX CREDIT EXTENDED

President Barack Obama has approved the extension and expansion of the Federal Tax Credit for Home Buyers. The tax credit will be extended through April 30, 2010, with a 60-day extension if a binding contract is in place prior to the deadline. First-time buyers (buyers who have not owned a principal residence for the past three years) will continue to receive a tax credit of up to $8,000, while existing homeowners will be eligible for the $6,500 if they have lived in their principal residences for at least five consecutive years. The qualifying income limits have been increased to $125,000 for single tax filers and $225,000 for joint filers. All homes with a purchase price of less than $800,000 qualify, including newly-constructed or resale, and single-family detached, townhomes or condominiums, provided that the home will be used as their principal residence. Vacation home and rental property purchases do NOT qualify.
